Objective: The course enables the student to acquire the essential basic knowledge on the early recognition of safety, legal requirement associated with safety, health and environment, and the existence of potential at the workplace. It will identify different elements of hazards involved, the effects and countermeasure as a corrective and preventive action. Hence, students should be able to demonstrate and apply the knowledge to continuing subjects that requires the knowledge developed in this subject.
|
Upon completion of this course students should be able to:
i.Understand the basic theoretical knowledge in safety, health and environment.
ii.Identify hazards and control measures and state the legal requirements according to related legislations.
iii. Carry out safety, health and environmental management tools.
This course prepares the students on two divisions in Chemistry; namely Physical Chemistry and Organic Chemistry.
The topics on Physical Chemistry are Thermochemistry, Electrochemistry;
and Chemical Kinetic. The topics covered under Organic Chemistry are introduction
to organic chemistry, hydrocarbons, haloalkanes, hydroxyl compounds, carbonyl
compounds, carboxylic acids and its derivatives, amines, amino acids and
proteins, and polymer.
This course would cover areas in basic chemistry, namely General Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry and with focus on Physical Organic.
The topics under General Chemistry are: Atom and molecule; mole concept;
states of matter. The topics on Inorganic Chemistry are: Atomic structure;
periodic table; chemical bonding. The topics covered under Physical Organic:
Ionic Equilibrium; Phase Equilibrium.
The study of fluid
mechanics is essential for engineering and technology student as this course
will equipped the student with a knowledge and understanding of fluid behaviour
and mechanism which often found in engineering applications. Engineers and
technologist also often apply the principles in thermodynamics to meet human
needs.
This course is to
give fundamental knowledge about type of materials, their structure, properties
and characteristics, which are important in engineering design. It is also
aimed to give a theoretical background about the analysis of behaviour of
engineering materials by emphasising important relationships between internal
structure and properties.
